Our second day of hiking took us to Highway 101 at the Thomas Creek Bridge. This is the only place our section of the trail followed the highway, in order to cross the tallest bridge in Oregon. As we peered 345 feet straight down we clung to guardrail, especially when motor homes whooshed past. The hardest part of beach camping is keeping sand out of your food, tent and everything else.
The trail went further and we followed it, only to end up at the back of an apartment complex parking lot. So yeah, unless you want to add a mile or two just for fun, don’t go past this spot. There’s nothing there but a forest walk to apartments. From the viewing area, you will also notice a trail continuing further south (your left). That just continues along a different trail that overlooks the area.
One, because it’s enjoyable but two, it’s the only way to get to the other side to walk along the beach. When you head back, you can go down to the second branch if you want to add some mileage, but there’s nothing there. We did find the trail that “married” up with the first branch though which offers some lovely cliffside views. The views are worth it if you’re fit and equipped enough to take on the trail. The vistas are gorgeous, and if you’re genuinely into it, you can even climb on top of the Natural Bridge.

Mostly because there were dunes and the path was a beach walk… I’ll tell you though, walking in soft sand will give your legs a workout. While Secret Beach may not be a secret anymore, it doesn’t make it not worth visiting! Not just a view of the beach, the actual beach. The trail is downhill toward the Natural bridges, and if you don’t have a sound footing while coming down, there IS a chance of continuing off the cliff.

There are also different shapes to choose from. Although this is a relatively small park, there are so many more trails and spots to explore. After spending several days here, I can easily say this is my favorite stretch of the Pacific Coast that I’ve seen. There isn’t one specific route we followed, as there were lots of forks in the trail splitting off in different directions. We meandered around the area marveling at the different rock formations and expansive views up and down the coast.
Without official beach camping areas, the 12-mile Boardman Corridor isn’t very friendly to backpackers. Most people will go left, get to the viewing platform, and either turn around or continue on the trail. Continuing on the path means you’re going away from the bridges and you’re hiking along the Coastal Trail. Head to the right of the parking lot and make sure you have good shoes on, no kids with you, and a strong sense of adventure.
